“Merry Christmas Baby…sure did treat me nice...”
Seattle, WA – Happy New Year..!!!! All of us at Highway 99 Blues Club want to wish everyone the very best for the new year in health and happiness…..with some great music thrown in…!!!
We are going to take a few days off to rest and get the club ready for 2010….WOW….we will be celebrating heading into our 6 th year of business bringing Seattle the best in blues, R & B, soul, Zydeco, roots and Americana music. We have some new things in store for the new year so be sure and check our website www.highwayninetynine.com for upcoming changes.
We will kick off the new year like we always do; some of our old friends will be hittin’ the highway, and some new changes with our monthly residencies and we will keep bringing the big blues double bills to the club as well.
The month gets rolling with the return of KEVIN SELFE AND THE TORNADOES from Portland. Kevin and his band just won more Muddy awards for best band and best new CD release. Check them out on January 9 th.
Highway 99 does more Louisiana Zydeco shows than any other club in town, so it makes sense that SEATTLE’S HOT ZYDECO CONNECTION starts doing a night every month. Every 2 nd Wednesday, they will provide dance lessons and a live band to get your Louisiana party started. Their first night will be January 13 and features longtime local Zydeco band FILE GUMBO.
Bringing Chicago just a little bit closer will be the windy city’s own STUDEBAKER JOHN AND THE HAWKS. A longtime fixture on the Chicago blues scene, John is a master of the slide guitar and the harmonica. His raw blues sound makes you feel that you have found something you were missing….January 15 for one night only.
January 22 brings another big blues double bill; this time featuring NICK VIGARINO’S MEANTOWN BLUES with special guests RAVIN’ WOLF. This promises to be a smokin’ good time full of Nick’s slop jar Delta funk blues and the soulful rocked up blues from the acoustic duo RAVIN’ WOLF.
You’ll say you saw them at Highway 99….from Portland it’s the INSOMNIACS…one of the bands that is creating quite the buzz on the national blues scene. A 2010 BMA nominee for best contemporary bluesrecording, the band mixes blues, roots and R & B for a swingin’ vintage blues sound with a Left Coast twist. The dancers love them; the fans can’t get enough of them and for one night you got em’….January 23.
We close the month out with two of our regular favorites; on January 29 it’s LEE OSKAR AND FRIENDS doing their monthly show. Featuring the legendary harmonica master Oskar, and his band of stellar local players. Known for his work with the bands WAR and THE LOW RIDER BAND, Oskar is the originator of the fusion of soul and Latin music. The very next night we bring back Portland’s Hall of Fame singer and blues guitarist extraordinaire, ROBBIE LAWS and his BIGGER BLUES BAND. This 7 piece band is fueled by three horns, a B-3 and snappy rhythm section. Featured at large festivals around the Northwest, Laws and his band bring their mix of swing blues and vintage R &B to the stage on January 30.
Not to be overlooked are some of the other shows hitting the stage. THE SAM MARSHALL TRIO, the return of soul, funk and blues band BUMP KITCHEN; a hot double header with THE BLUES ORBITERS and PAUL GREEN & STRAIGHT SHOT; BECKI SUE AND HER BIG ROCKIN’ DADDIES to name a few.
Every Monday night we feature the Highway 99 Dance Band and swing dance lessons with JIM MIINTY. Here is your chance to learn the moves and then try them out. Every Tuesday it’s the return of the SCARLET TREE ALL-STARS featuring JIMMY HOLDEN and your host CHOLO WILLSIN.
While you are checking out our other offerings, you will want to make note of THE SONIC FUNK ORCHESTRA, MAXWELL STREET REVIVAL, PURTY MOUTH’S MONTHLY VARIETY SHOW , THE JAMES HOWARD BAND and…..whew….HOT ROD’S BLUES REVUE.
It’s 2010….what are your wishes for the New Year? At least let the music shine and make you happy. Come and try our new expanded menu, stay for the shows and let the musicians know how much you care for them.
