“ let’s make some Memphis soul stew….1/2 cup of bass; 4 cups of fat back drums, 4 tablespoons of Memphis guitar, a pinch of organ, ½ pint of horns…turn up the flame and bring it all to a boil…”
Seattle, WA - Highway 99 Blues Club, your award winning musical home for the best in blues, soul, Americana, zydeco and R & B is bringing in the fall season with some serious music and great new food from our recently expanded menu. Some brand new acts will hit the highway in November and some of our favorites return as well. Plan ahead, you don’t want to miss any of the action this month.
The first weekend in November is jam packed; and kicks off on Thursday, November 5 thwith the NATHAN JAMES TRIO . Hailing from San Diego, James is a former winner of the IBC contest in Memphis and brings his low down Memphis blues sound to Seattle with his new band.
November 6 finds the amazing JOHN NEMETH returning to Seattle. One of the fastest rising stars on the national blues scene, Nemeth’s harp and vocal skills capture the classic R & B soul style of his retro-modern take on the blues.
Our pals in musical crime – Portland’s THE STRANGETONES shimmy and shake up I-5 to bring their brand of spiced up blues, rockabilly and swingin’ sounds to Highway 99. Guitar Julie and the boys always throw down a great night of music – one night on November 7.
November 12 is one of the events we are proud to present and be associated with; RAVEN’S 9 th ANNUAL JAM FOR CANS. This event features 30; yes 30, different Northwest musicians all giving their talents to help support NORTHWEST HARVEST . This year’s donation is $9 or 9 cans of food. The music starts at 6pm and goes until we lock the doors….a great event, great music and best of all a really good cause.
Well here we go again...making it hard for you to stay away from the club. November 13 marks the return of Portland’s DK STEWART AND THE SOUL SURVIVOR HORNS . DK is simply one of the best New Orleans piano stompers around. His brand of funkified, jumpin’ blues is smokin’ and we know the dance floor is gonna be packed.
Making their Highway 99 Blues Club debut on November 14 is RICK ESTRIN AND THE NIGHTCATS . We are really excited to finally have them at the club. Ranking among the best harp and singers in the blues universe, Estrin and his band featuring KID ANDERSEN on guitar are a super cool, hip road tested blues outfit . The band is touring behind their new Alligator release “ Twisted”; a not to be missed show by one of the best bands out there.
It is not often that we get to have a band like MARK STUART AND THE BASTARD SONS visit our club. Long known as the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, founder Stuart has re-named the band and put out a brand new CD. “Pure Americana heart and soul” said Rolling Stone magazine. From Austin, Texas this critically acclaimed country/roots band currently has the #1 CD on the Roots charts. Thursday, November 20 is your chance to enjoy this show.
Other weekend shows worth noting are some of our regular visitors; BECKI SUE AND HER BIG ROCKIN’ DADDIES get your motor running with their brand of rockin’ blues on November 21. Legendary harp master LEE OSKAR and Friends do their monthly show on Friday, November 27. From the originator of the Latin/soul sound, Oskar’s shows are a must see; always special surprises, guest artists and the music that came from the band WAR and the LOW RIDER BAND.
November 28 brings THE ROBBIE LAWS BIGGER BLUES BAND back. Their last show was a sell-out and this 7 piece band features the multi-award winning Robbie Laws on guitar and vocals. Three horns, a booming B-3 and solid rhythm section back up this band’s version of vintage R & B, and jumpin’, swingin’ blues.
Don’t forget about our other nights of music; every Monday night it is STORMY MONDAY with the Highway 99 dance band. The night features blues swing dancing with dance lessons starting at 8pm.
Every Tuesday night it is the SCARLET TREE ALL-STARS with your hosts CHOLO WILLSIN and JIMMY HOLDEN. Bringing back the soulful sounds of Seattle R & B, this band and their special guests provide a great night of music.
Other shows worth noting; JOHN “SCOOCH” CUGNO’S DELTA 88 REVIVAL ; MAXWELL STREET REVIVAL bringing hard Chicago style blues to the stage; the SOURMASH STEVEDORES , and a special visit this month on November 18 from BILL BROWN AND THE KINGBEES.
