SEATTLE , WA – Summer. Is it really here? Will it be here soon? One thing about Seattle, we all know when summer shows up….June, July or August…!! The blues and summer have always gone together and we hope to heat things up for June. Some New Orleans, some Mississippi, some funk, soul and blues; just another great month of music at Highway 99 Blues Club.

New Orleans is gonna be represented with a blast the first weekend; riding in from Louisiana will be DIKKI DU AND THE ZYDECO KREWE on Friday, June 5. A member of the esteemed Carrier family, Dikki and the band add doses of funk and originality to their Zydeco gumbo. Always a great, high energy dance party. The next night on June 6, will be Portland’s DK STEWART AND THE HEART ATTACK HORNS. A longtime veteran of the blues scene, DK has played with the likes of delay, Cotton, Salgado and Buddy Guy. Mixing blues, roots and New Orleans funk into an up-tempo blend of swingin’ blues.

Continuing with our double bill shows, we bring in two of Seattle’s best blues bands….on one night..! PAUL GREEN AND STRAIGHT SHOT and CHRIS STEVENS’ SURF MONKEYS will share the stage on June 12. Both Green and Stevens have won numerous best of awards for harp/vocals and guitar respectively. Green has a bit funky take on the blues, while Stevens is more of an uptown version that swings.

One of our favorite’s; LLOYD JONES and his band, THE STRUGGLE, will ride the rails up from Portland for Saturday, June 13. Lloyd’s brand of the blues brings the funk of Memphis and the storytelling of the South to the stage. A great entertainer, Lloyd has won numerous awards for guitar/vocals and songwriting.

June 19 th brings the RANDY OXFORD BAND led by the “trombone man”. This band works the blues from Memphis to Motown – featuring Hall-of-Fame vocalist PATTI ALLEN.

June 20 finds Mississippi born and raised soul singer TERRY EVANS returning to Highway 99. Evans is a grammy winner, BMA nominee and has recorded with the likes of RY COODER, BOZ SCAGGS and JOHN FOGERTY. A dynamic showman and classic blues singer. Another one of our frequent acts, Evans is always on his game.

Other shows to make note of this month; SOURMASH STEVEDORES, THE BOUCHARDS and JD HOBSON on June 3. The SONIC FUNK ORCHESTRA, SATELLITE 4 with the CURTIS HAMMOND BAND, PURTY MOUTH ’S MONTHLY VARIETY SHOW, JAMES HOWARD BAND and the newly formed HOT ROD’S RHYTHM AND SOUL REVUE, featuring a stellar line-up of local musicians and super smooth soul singer from Portland, RICHARD ARNOLD.

Also returning this month will be the FELONIUS FUNK COLLECTIVE on June 4. This is a gathering of some of the best players from lots of different bands who get together and bring a bag full of funk, soul and jazz music. Featuring three different singers; Kim Archer, Stephanie Porter and John Oliver, this band also shows up with at least 4 horns….sometimes more.

Closing out the month will be two of the area’s best local bands. Friday, June 26 will be the return of NEARLY DAN. An impressive group that has captured the soul and arranging of the music of STEELY DAN. With 12 members, the band re-creates the sound that SD is known for. Horns, vocalists and spot on arrangements, this is a great night of music. Saturday, June 27 local soul band DoctorfunK brings their brand of classic soul and funk music to the club. Formed over 10 years ago, the band is still going strong and features tight arranging and 5 horns.
